THAT DREADED WORD. . . EXERCISE

Updated: Oct 2, 2023

Am I too Old to start exercising?

You are never too old to start exercising. You may feel that you just can’t do it or can’t keep up. . .you’re too broken. . . or you just don’t have the energy. Great excuses, but sorry. . .not valid. I started formal gym exercise in my 50’s and have continued and I’m 72. Am I consistent? Truthfully . . .not. Some days, the pain is just too bad, some days I’m just plain lazy, but I don’t quit. . .I’ve found different exercises that I can do and they do help.

But what are the benefits if I have health issues?

Make sure you check with your doctor, but most will say that exercise is good for your heart and your general health. Being physically active can improve your brain health, help manage weight, reduce the risk of disease, strengthen bones and muscles, improve balance and improve your everyday activities. Adults who sit less and do any amount of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity gain some health benefits.

How do I start and where do I go?

There are so many options these days. I would recommend that if you have never really exercised, find a good program, trainer or gym that understands your abilities and restrictions and are supportive. Just remember, exercise to your age. In my 60’s I was trying to compete with 30+ year old's and injured myself. Start slow and build up. There are many on-line programs for seniors now. When I started, it was limited, but now I see many out there. I found Grow Young Fitness. Deron is the trainer and he has a vast array of programs that you can purchase on CD or go to his internet site to join. Here is a sample of his Starter Pack for Seniors https://amzn.to/3LJRwtg . He starts out with Chair exercises and you go at your own pace. There is also a Facebook page for support. Contact me for more info.

Another Great program is Beachbody. . .this one can be a little intimidating as there is so much to choose from, but Karen is a great trainer for Beachbody and has a Facebook page to give you support from her and other members. Let Karen know what your specific needs are. Her contact is https://facebook.com/kdgfaithandfitness.

Good luck and as Deron says "Keep it Movin'"
