MWLJ (#4) The struggles at home

Updated: Sep 13, 2023

BACKGROUND HISTORY . . . Before, I address my journey, I need to give you some background history. I'm 72 years old and have been retired going on 2 years. I never had a weight problem until I hit my 40's. In my 50's I was able to come down from a size 20 to a size 14 with an exercise program. In my 60's, I started to gain back my weight. I got married and Joe and I love to eat. We care for his disabled grandson and had minimal outside help. About the only quality time we had was to go out to eat occassionally. We both love to eat and bread pudding was one of our favorites. (We found all the good places to get it.) Those first few year of adjusting to marriage after being single for 25 years made turn to food for comfort. I continued to gain weight and went back up to a size 20. I knew this wasn't healthy and as much as I tried, I couldn't get the weight off. I also have bone on bone knees so I was beginning to have to use assisted products to be able to walk. Any long distance walking was out of the question. I used a scooter to get around most of the time when I wasn't at home.

SO, THE JOURNEY BEGINS . . . The first thing I did was sit down and pray and ask God to join me on this journey and confess that I couldn't accomplish it on my own. I turned it over to Him. The second thing I did was to visit my doctor, who agreed that I needed to do something. He agreed that I needed to do something to jump start my weight loss program and needed to change my eating habits, although he wasn't fond of me getting the shot or taking the pills, but understood that I had to try. He just asked me to limit it to 3 months and review it with him at that time. He also wanted to work at walking the stairs instead of taking the chair lift we installed. I made him the committment that the next time I came in I would be walking the steps and would not be on my scooter.

ROADBLOCKS AND BREAKTHROUGHS . . .The next day I went to diet clinic in Norco and was planning on getting the semaglutide shot in 3 weeks when it was available. In the meantime I started a program of a B12 shot with fat reducers every two weeks and a light dose of appetite suppressant. When I returned in two weeks, I found out he couldn't get that shot anymore in California, but he was working on another supplier and might have something in three weeks. I realized that maybe God was trying to tell me that the shot wasn't for me as all doors seemed to close in that direction. So my dietician and I decided to stay on the shot and appetite depressent and see how it worked.
